Yakisugi raised garden beds
A raised bed you can trust around your food
Most raised beds come down to a trade-off: pressure-treated lumber that a lot of growers would rather keep away from their vegetables, or untreated boards that start to soften within a few seasons. Yakisugi is the third option.
Every bed starts as SPF Select lumber. I char each board over open flame, wire-brush it to reveal the grain, and seal it with pure tung oil. The carbon layer protects against moisture, rot, insects and UV, and the oil is food-safe with zero chemical additives.
Stakes are built into every design and run about 8 inches below grade, so the bed stays anchored and square instead of bowing out under the weight of the soil.

Common questions
Is yakisugi wood safe for growing vegetables?
Yes. The finish is carbonized wood and pure tung oil, a food-safe oil with no chemical additives. There are no preservatives or treatments in the wood to leach into your soil.
What is the difference between yakisugi and shou sugi ban?
They are the same technique. Yakisugi (焼杉) is the common Japanese name, and shou sugi ban is an alternate reading of the same characters that caught on in North America.
How long will a yakisugi raised bed last?
These beds are designed to be a permanent part of your garden, not something you replace every few seasons. The charred layer and tung oil protect the wood, and the below-grade stakes keep the bed from bowing or drifting over time.
What comes with a kit?
Every finished component, the purpose-cut stakes, stainless deck screws and illustrated assembly instructions.
Can I get a different size or height?
Yes. Every bed is built to order, so custom lengths, widths, heights and multi-bed layouts are welcome. Request a custom quote with your measurements.
